The Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Higher Education Endowment Program funding is available to SWO Tribal members attending an accredited post secondary school full-time and part-time at the "undergraduate level", "graduate level" and or “Professional Level” (e.g. Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges).   Students must provide their SWO tribal enrollment verification.  The field of study is not limited to any particular discipline. The primary objective of the Endowment Funding is to provide confidence in a manner that will increase the number of Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate attending college. Students applying for funding may attend any accredited college that is accredited by North Central Association of schools and colleges. Comprehensive universities, regional universities, two-year colleges, private institutions and online universities within South Dakota or outside of the state are acceptable as long as they are accredited. The award is disbursed to the student and is based on grade and credits earned.  Award notification is given once all paperwork has been completed and submitted to the program.  Deadline dates are stated on the eligibility notice. The deadline dates are approved by the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Tribal Council.

The Higher Education Endowment Program strongly encourages and supports the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate students to have faith and confidence in their abilities to strive for and achieve their dreams.

Criteria for Higher Education Endowment

The student must be an enrolled member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate.

Must be attending an accredited post secondary school

The student must pass the course with a grade of “C” or better to receive the education endowment funding.

Undergraduate students- will be paid according to per credit hour earned.

Graduate students- will receive the endowment incentive based on graduate level of studies and will be paid according to per credit hour earned.

(Incentive award amount is approved by council per fiscal year)


Deadline dates for submitting grades

March 31- For courses taken August/September through December

August 31 – For courses taken January through May

September 15- For courses taken June through August

On-Line & Quarter System Courses- Must be submitted within 4 weeks of issuance of grades.


Incentive programs offered through the Higher Education Endowment Office are NOT RETROACTIVE.


Higher Education Endowment Program (FY - 2013)

Application Process: (Higher Education WILL NOT process applications without all of the necessary information.)

A.      All applicants must fully complete and application and provide proof of:


             o     Verification of acceptance into an accredited college REQUIRED

             o     SWO Tribal Enrollment (unless already on file) REQUIRED

             o     Final grade report with name and student ID number REQUIRED

New students will not have this until the first semester is complete

B.      Applications will not be processed without all the necessary information.

C.      It is the student’s responsibility to verify that all needed documentation is completed.

                      Note:  Incomplete applications will be kept for 30 days if application is

                      not complete within 30 days the application will be destroyed.


                  II. Grant Amounts

A.      Grant amounts are based upon credit hours that are completed and passed during the current semester

B.      Courses with grades “D”, “F”, “I”, and “W” will not be taken into account. However, if a student retakes the 
          course and receives a “C” or better, they will receive a grant amount for it. (Please note: a student will not
          be paid twice for the same course). Will accept P&S grading scale, pay according to credits earned.

C.      The grant amount will be:

            o      $56.00 per credit hour for undergraduates

            o      $75.00 for graduate students


D.      The quarter terms students will have 4 weeks from the date on their transcripts to receive an incentive for the
         eligible grades for that semester.
