Service Description

The purpose of the program is to provide community health education services in a manner that empowers Tribal members to make positive, progressive and sustained personal choices about healthy lifestyles, utilization of available health services and health careers.

Patient education is offered in the community and the schools to raise awareness on how to lower one’s risk for many chronic health problems and infectious illnesses.

Topics include cancer awareness and screenings, injury prevention, tobacco prevention and cessation, sexually transmitted disease prevention, behavioral health awareness and screenings, drug & alcohol abuse awareness, immunizations, heart health, diabetes awareness and prevention, nutrition, and physical activity.

Health education is provided in a variety of ways such as health fairs, conferences, newspaper articles, health brochures, public service announcements, radio, posters, small group sessions, lunch n’ learns, the CHE Facebook page, and one-on-one counseling.

The staff can provide training and education and are certified in the following areas:

• HIV/AIDS
• Hepatitis C
• Child Passenger Safety
• Life Skills Curriculum
• Tobacco Intervention

  Health Career Promotion

  Recruitment and retention of health care providers is a priority in the SWO 5 Year Health Plan.

  The Summer Student Extern Program is designed for post-secondary students committed to building their skill and competence in the health care field through hands-on work experience.  Students work up to 400 hours in one of the Sisseton IHS or Tribal Health Programs.
