Section 103 Tribal Air Quality Program

The mission of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate’s Air Quality Program is to protect and enhance human health and the environment on the Lake Traverse Reservation, through effective management of air quality, respecting sovereignty and cultural values of the Dakota Oyate. Maintaining the pristine quality of the air on the Lake Traverse Reservation is the focus of the Tribal Air Quality Program.
In doing this, the areas of concern are: Maintaining the National Ambient Air Quality Standards, for the criteria pollutants: Ozone, Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Oxides, Particulate Matter, Sulfur dioxide and lead.
Air borne agriculture chemicals and particulate matter (dust) are the pollutants common to rural areas.

Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate’s Air Quality Program has set the following goals:

Emissions Inventory

Air Quality Master Plan

Air Quality Codes and Standards

The Tribal Air Quality Program was funded in 1999 by Region 8 Environmental Protection Agency , Denver , Colorado.
The funding was provided under Section 103 of the Clean Air Act for developing programs.
The project objectives have been to perform an emissions inventory; to identify pollution sources and types on the reservation. To develop a ten year master plan for the air quality program and to develop standards and codes for air quality control.
