Mission

The Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO) was established in 2005. The THPO provides the people of the Lake Traverse Reservation with the means to protect and preserve their historic, cultural and sacred places and items. THPO is responsible for the preservation of cultural resources, either physically or through documentation which are determined to be significant to its past and future.

As outlined in the Memorandum of Agreement between the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate and the National Park Service, it is our mission to promote, educate, enhance, identify, encourage, and preserve traditional activities, materials and areas for the benefit of the future generations. The Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO) shall also defend all ancestral burials and traditional cultural properties from disinterment of desecration.
