TRIBAL HISTORIC PRESERVATION

The Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO) was established in 2005. The THPO provides the people of the Lake Traverse Reservation with the means to protect and preserve their historic, cultural and sacred places and items. THPO is responsible for the preservation of cultural resources, either physically or through documentation.

The THPO status allows the SWO to manage and protect our cultural and sacred sites on trust lands and to consult on projects on federal lands, federally funded projects that require a federal permitting process.
As outlined in the Memorandum of Agreement between the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate and the National Park Service it is our mission:

traditional activities, materials and areas for the benefit of the future generations. The Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO) shall defend and protect all ancestral burials and traditional cultural properties from disinterment or desecration.
